My sister Lola walked over to dad one afternoon and said, "Dad, will you please stop smoking?" He looked at her funny. He stabbed his cigarette out in the ashtray and said, "Yeah, Lola, I will! It's time!"

Lola looks happy when she talks about it. She said he used to smoke all the time and everywhere. It got in her eyes; also she says he had this pale, pained, distracted look and spent lots of time fooling with cigarettes instead of on important things like her and Sean and me! Important things! He quit just after I was born. He stopped smoking naturally! There is no bulge in his shirt pocket where he used to keep them! Lola says I'm lucky. It was terrible. There was smoke that stung her nostrils when she breathed, hurt her eyes; these are what made her walk up and ask him.

Dad says it was when she was four, gosh, 10 years ago! She was completely amazed: first of all that she got the nerve to ask him and then that he actually did stop smoking cigarettes, how easy it was for him to quit smoking for good.

It is not about willpower, you don't need anything to put in place of the cigarettes you used to think you needed but really don't. In fact, whatever you put in place of tobacco has two things wrong with it: first is the guilt you think you need to feel for quitting (you think you need to feel guilty for having smoked too), and next is whatever you put in place of cigarettes only makes you remember that you smoke - and off you go, reminiscing about how good it was and how lousy the particular substitute you chose for cigarettes is compared with the real thing!

Whatever you replace cigarettes with only reminds you of cigarettes so replacing them is like trying not to think about elephants: the harder you try, the more you do!

Anyway, here's dad's story.

The Way to Regain Your Health is to...

Stop hurting yourself!

You tell yourself you can quit smoking any time. How do I know this? I used to tell myself the same thing, starting the afternoon a chum of mine invited me to try one on the parking lot where we stood, waiting for the class bell to ring. "No," he said with emphasis. "Don't just put the smoke in your mouth and then blow it back out again, no, no, no! That doesn't do anything at all. The fun starts when you pull the smoke down in your lungs. Go on, Thomas, give it a try!" I did. Wow! "It hurts!" I cried. "Yeah, at first a little bit. But you will get used to it. How do you feel? Different, huh?" Indeed I did. Apart from the pain in my lungs there was this crazy feeling of lost equilibrium, of lights and a world full of fun and love. They call these feelings the buzz cigarettes give you. In the confusion I said to myself, "Well, I don't have to do this at all, if I don't want to. I don't ever need to do it again!" But I did; one cigarette simply led to another, like no one can eat just one peanut or one potato chip.

It is called smoking addiction!

Your body rids itself of nicotine in hours. Nicotine stimulates pleasure centers in your brain as do the additives cigarette manufacturers mix in with the tobacco. When the nicotine fades, the cells of your body cry out for more and what you tell yourself is that another wee cigarette can't possibly hurt. After all, you can take it or leave it, now can't you? You can stop anytime you like... The book I have to offer you is a prize-winner; it makes stopping smoking easy, not in the sense that you don't have to do anything - that's what you've been doing for so very long now! When the nicotine in your body starts fading away your body, especially the pleasure centers in your brain that the nicotine stimulates, start crying out for more. The fading of the nicotine is a physical event. It is only natural that you should notice it. It comes in the form of a craving for more and this is where your mind joins in: another one won't hurt, you tell yourself and then invent a thousand reasons why. This is your mind's reaction to the feelings that you have when feel the stimulation nicotine brings with it fall. "Oh, my!"

Missing nicotine makes you thoughtful but only in a very narrow way. Think of the things you used to love doing that have simply fallen by the wayside because you'd rather drink coffee and smoke cigarettes instead of doing any of the things you did before?

Have a quick look at the website now where you can read excerpts from the book that won a prize, a book the Director of the University of California's Smoking Cessation Leadership Center liked well enough to endorse!

My Love, Please Stop Smoking

You can get them all back, the things you let fall. The minute you stop smoking, they will return on their own accord, like lost things finding their way home, which means stopping is not some horrible chore, bleak as fear, but an extravagant joy. Not only do you start feeling much better right away, the things you loved troop back to you! Go ahead and trade the misery of thinking you must fail in on the life you abandoned without any real need to do so but the nagging thought that another cigarette would do just fine.

Like as not it is your scratchy throat that will fascinate you when the withdrawal of the nicotine comes to your attention. Hmmm! What's that? An itchy throat. I bet if I smoke another cigarette it will go away! Indeed it will. The sensation of the smoke will make it disappear only the goofy part of it is that smoking is what made it itch and scratch in the first place!

Nicotine withdrawal, then, makes you aware of nothing so much as what smoking has done to you. Hang onto your hat! Here's where the going gets really crazy. A smoker in need thinks what smoking has done to them is something they are feeling because they need another cigarette! What withdrawal symptoms are is an awareness of the aches and pains smoking has created in a body that was far better off before the smoking thing flared up. It is a joke!

People say, "I simply haven't got willpower enough - as though anyone ever willed themselves to smoke! You don't need willpower to stop smoking; you simply need to disarm the regiments of excuses that guard your smoking habit like an army.

It is fiendish what smokers do to themselves the thousands of excuses they invent for smoking another one when the lightning bolt of thought crashes through to them: "Got to have another cigarette!"

Once again! Go on and have a look, at my fact-filled website, at the sampler from the book, and at the reasons why reading a supportive text will help you:

My Love, Please Stop Smoking

The great thing about stopping is that all of a sudden you feel this surge of energy. Hey, go with the flow! Not only have you quit hurting yourself with every breath you take, enjoyments that fell by the wayside while you smoked will all start turning up again, like the old friends they are and, they will get you moving again! and there goes the fat!

Go on, do it! Take the risk... You won't regret it and anyway, it's free!
